Strengthening Economic Ties: Spain’s Strategic Vision for Commercial and Investment Relations with Romania

2026 will mark the 145th year of diplomatic relations between Spain and Romania. The relationship between our countries goes far and it is a close one. In fact, in 2013 a strategic partnership was established.  In terms of economy, trade and investment, our bilateral flows have grown consistently since the accession of Romania to the European Union. Moreover, the strong connection of our citizens reflects the positive contribution of Romanian citizens in Spain over the years.

In terms of strategy, our mission is guided by two core objectives:

On the one hand, promoting bilateral trade: We aim to facilitate greater access for Spanish and Romanian companies to each other’s markets, reducing barriers and encouraging collaboration across sectors. In this sense, we provide Spanish companies with the information, contacts and promotion activities to increase their presence in the market.

On the other hand, encouraging Investment: We support Spanish investors in identifying opportunities in Romania, assisting them if necessary and connecting them with Romanian authorities, local institutions, and relevant stakeholders. Through the Embassy’s Economic and Commercial Office, we provide guidance, facilitate dialogue, and provide contacts for legal and fiscal consultancy to ensure that investment projects are well-supported. We are also involved in helping Romanian companies interested in investing in our country, directly from the Embassy and also putting them in touch with Invest in Spain.

From an economic standpoint, several shared priorities are driving the growth of trade relations:

  • Infrastructure and Transport: Spanish expertise in infrastructure development complements Romania’s strategic location and ongoing modernization efforts. There are Spanish companies who have been actively working in Romania for more than 20 years in building and supervising emblematic public works.
  • Renewable Energy and Environment: Both countries are committed to the green transition, creating opportunities in solar, wind, and energy efficiency technologies.
  • Agri-food and Agro-industrial Cooperation: Spain advanced agri-food sector and Romania’s agricultural potential offer fertile ground for collaboration.
  • Digital Economy and Innovation: Startups, IT services, and digital platforms are increasingly becoming a bridge between our economies.

Value of Spanish Investments in Romania

As of the latest available data, Spanish investments in Romania exceed €2 billion, positioning Spain among the top foreign investors in the country. These investments span over 1,200 companies and contribute significantly to employment, innovation, and regional development.

Romania continues to attract Spanish investment in:

  • Automotive and Components: With Romania’s strong industrial base, Spanish firms are investing in manufacturing and supply chain operations.
  • Real Estate and Construction: Spanish companies have played a significant role in urban development and residential projects.
  • Retail and Consumer Goods: Spanish brands are well-represented in Romania’s retail landscape, reflecting strong consumer demand, especially in the fashion industry. Nevertheless, we believe there is still room for improvement in some sectors.
  • Renewable Energy: Investment in solar and wind farms is growing, supported by Romania’s energy transition policies.

In terms of trade, our bilateral flows exceeded 6 billion euros in 2025, more than tripling the bilateral trade our countries had before Romania entered the EU.

The most exchanged products include:

  • Spanish Exports to Romania: Cars and components, machinery, meat, clothes and electrical equipment are the most exported goods from Spain to Romania
  • Romanian Exports to Spain: Cars and components, electrical equipment, machinery, cereals, rubber and furniture are the most imported goods by Spain from Romania.

As the Spanish Ambassador to Romania, I am proud of the growing economic and commercial relationship between our two nations, and we are committed to facilitate an increase in this matter. Spain and Romania share a dynamic partnership rooted in shared values, EU and NATO membership, and a growing mutual interest in sustainable development, innovation, and inclusive growth. I am certain there are opportunities and potential for Spanish and Romanian companies to increase our trade and investment, resulting in benefits for both our companies, our citizens and our countries.
