Discover how ALRO, one of Europe’s largest vertically integrated aluminium producer, created its
high value-added aluminium product portfolio
ALRO S.A. (BVB: ALR, “the Company” or “ALRO”), one of the largest vertically integrated aluminium producers in Europe, measured by production capacity, has a 55-year long track record of delivering a client-driven range of products that enabled the Company to transform itself from a commodity supplier into a value-adding manufacturer. The main market for ALRO products is represented by the European Union; however, the Company exports its products to the USA and Asia, as well. ALRO is ISO 9001 certified for quality management and has NADCAP and EN 9100 certificates for aerospace production organizations, ALRO’s products adhere to the quality standards for primary aluminium on the LME, as well as international standards for flat-rolled products.
With more than 15 years of investment programmes focused on modernizing its facilities and implementing the latest state-of-the-art production technology with the objective to be a Green Factory, Sustainable and Innovative, ALRO’s capacity enables the production of 265,000 tpa of electrolytic aluminium, 35,000 tpa of secondary aluminium with a planned capacity increase to 100,000 tpa, 325,000 tonnes of primary aluminium cast products and in the near future of 120,000 tpa of processed aluminium products. Since 16 November 2020, ALRO is a member of ASI (Aluminium Stewardship Initiative), an international association that contributes to enhancing sustainability in the global aluminium sector.
The continuous investments in production capacity, in efficiently utilizing resources and in employee trainings have defined the Company’s culture and can be easily recognized in the trust enjoyed from partners and customers for our portfolio of value-added products, both primary (wire rods, billets, slabs) and processed (coils, sheets, plates, extruded profiles).
Through the constant implementation of energy efficiency programs and applied circular economy principles, investments and alignment programs to local and European regulations, the Company innately developed a diversified and high value-added product portfolio, that meets the requirements of sophisticated industries, such as automotive and aerospace:
Technical purity aluminium (1xxx series) – Recommended for food contact and used extensively for food containers. In the form of thin films, it is widely used in storing and preparing food. It is also widely used in electronic and household appliances, in architecture projects and decorative applications.
Al – Cu Alloys (2xxx Series) – Hard alloys with high mechanical strength and excellent machinability. Widely used in the field of aviation and defence industry, in the core structures of equipment, armour plates and other highly reliable components.
Al – Mn Alloys (3xxx Series) – Ideal materials for the production of cladded products because of their innate resistance to high temperatures. Extensively used in the automotive and air conditioning industry, heat exchangers and thermal equipment, but also for facades, curtain walls and roofs in buildings, pavilions and mobile constructions, as they are resistant to atmospheric corrosion.
Al – Si Alloys (4xxx Series) – Low melting temperatures and high liquid fluidity combined with an advantageous surface tension make these alloys very useful in welding applications. The newest generation of these ecological alloys have a special chemical composition that offers a higher degree of recycling.
Al – Mg Alloys (5xxx Series) – Produced in different hardness degrees, these alloys have very good machinability by cutting and good corrosion behaviour. Special thermomechanical treatments can optimize the resistance to exfoliation corrosion and the intergranular nature of corrosion for use in shipbuilding in the marine industry.
Al – Mg – Si Alloys (6xxx Series) – Ideal for use in profile extrusion, for general engineering applications and in Auto Body Sheets applications. These alloys have an optimal combination of mechanical and anti-corrosion resistance, an excellent decorative anodizing behaviour, as well as high plasticity.
Al – Zn Alloy (7xxx Series) – The series contains the strongest aluminium alloys, with ultimate tensile strength that can exceed 600 MPa. In addition to aerospace and military applications, these alloys are also used in the vacuum equipment, semiconductors and plastic injection moulds industries.
Diverse Al alloys (Series 8xxx) – These alloys are especially used in the manufacturing of strip, sheets and foils. Food foils (House-Hold types) are preferentially produced from these alloys, whilst other typical products are Pilfer Proof type corks, jar lids and food cans.
