Viscri, Brașov County
You can go to Viscri a million times in this life, it still won’t stop surprising you. You still won’t be surprised and, no matter how many times you go there, you still won’t believe that there can be so much peace in a place populated by people (only about 500, that’s right). You arrive in Viscri after an unpaved road of about 20 minutes by car, where you will not be able to take your eyes off the window and kill it, throwing it at the phone display. No chance! If the sunset catches you here, you will see a few flocks of cows returning slowly to the house, but stopping at the village fountain to quench their thirst.
And you will not come to believe that it is not a story of Creanga, but that it is your vacation. You will be surprised by involuntarily waving to the locals who are sitting on the bench in front of the house, who look at you curiously and greet you. And we would be very surprised to be able to refrain from exchanging two words with them. You will not be surprised at all that Prince Charles fell head over heels in love with this Saxon settlement, that he bought a property here and that he did not stop praising this Transylvanian village.
But how did this place preserved in medieval times manage to preserve its pure authenticity despite the cruelty of time? Through a so-called „social contract”, each local promised to preserve the identity of the village and not to make any changes to the environment, housing or roads in the absence of general approval.
Make no mistake that, if you get to Viscri, you will only spend an hour or two, listen to his silence and then take your shoes off. Don’t even think about it! Spend a few nights there, sleep in the houses of the locals, taste the traditional food and talk to the locals. These are all experiences you will be grateful for.
